Dr Terrence Soong is the founder of EYEMEDICS Specialist Eye Centre. He earned his medical degree from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom and went on to train at various teaching hospitals in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Upon his return to Malaysia, Dr Soong practised as an eye specialist in the University of Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur and was the chief resident of the Ophthalmology Department. He is one the few Malaysians to be conferred Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of London.

Dr Soong completed a sub-specialty fellowship training in Vitreo-retinal Surgery & Retinal Disorders in Adelaide, Australia in 2013. He then returned to Malaysia to practise at Selayang Hospital, which is the leading hospital in Malaysia for vitreo-retinal surgery. From 2015 to 2019, Dr Soong was the chair of the Ophthalmology Department at Jesselton Medical Centre, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

He is a gazetted eye specialist of the Malaysian Ministry of Health KKM and is registered with the National Specialist Registry Malaysia for Ophthalmology. Dr  Soong was a council member of the College of Ophthalmologists at the Academy of Medicine, Malaysia and is a life member of the Malaysian Medical Association MMA and is the current Honorary Treasurer for Association of Private Practitioner Sabah APPS. He is also a certified postgraduate examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London. Dr Soong has authored over 20 papers in peer reviewed journals and presented his clinical research at various international conferences.

Dr Soong specializes in retinal diseases, general ophthalmology and cataract. He has extensive experience in:-

  • Vitreo-retinal and macular surgery (retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, advanced diabetic retinopathy)
  • Advanced cataract surgery (multifocal lens, astigmatic toric lens, phakic lenses, sutureless scleral fixated lens, iris-clip lens)
  • Glaucoma (trabeculectomy, glaucoma tubes, selective laser trabeculoplasty SLT and micro-incision glaucoma shunts MIGS)
  • Medical retina disorders, including diabetic eye disease (diabetic maculopathy and retinopathy)
  • Retinal vascular disease (retinal vein occlusion) and age related macular degeneration (intravitreal injections and steroid implants, subthreshold micropulse retinal laser)
  • Pterygium surgery (conjunctival autograft, amniotic membrane, mitomycin-C) Childhood myopia
  • Treatments which include intravitreal injections of Ranibizumab / Aflibercept / Faricimab / Ozurdex and posterior segment argon laser, photodynamic therapy and YAG laser treatments
  • Modern retinal imaging techniques such as Optical Coherence Tomography, Fundus Fluorescein Angiography and Indocyanine Angiography
