Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (Hope in Sight) project performs cataract surgeries for 3 more patients
(Kota Kinabalu News) As age increases, eye function will inevitably decline, and cataracts are a common eye disease.
As we all know, the price of cataract surgery is not cheap, often costing more than 3,000 ringgit. This makes many people, especially low-income groups, unable to undergo surgery to restore good vision.
To this end, the Kota Kinabalu Pearl Rotary Club and Kota Kinabalu EYEMEDICS Eye Specialist Center have jointly implemented the Hope in Sight project to provide free cataract surgeries to eligible women from low-income groups.
Following two women who underwent surgery last month, three more women, Goh, 65, Mary, 66, and Latifah, 54, underwent surgery today to remove a cataract from one of their eyes.
Goh Wei Yi, chairman of the Kota Kinabalu Pearl Rotary Club, said that the club’s goal this year is to assist 10 women in undergoing surgeries. In addition to the 5 people who have completed the surgeries so far, 3 more people will undergo surgeries on the 24th.
“Although this activity is mainly to assist women in need, we will not ignore the needs of the male community, so we are working hard to engage with other groups in the hope that they can also provide similar assistance to needy and eligible men. .”
At the same time, she also called on women in need to check the club’s Facebook page for more details and apply to the Kota Kinabalu Pearl Rotary Club.
Dr. Terrence Soong of EYEMEDICS, who is responsible for these cataract surgeries, said that cataract surgeries are minimally invasive surgeries and can be completed in about 15 minutes.
He said that in the past, most people suffering from cataracts were senior citizens over 60 years old, but now there is a trend of younger people suffering from cataracts, with some people suffering from this eye disease when they are about 30 years old.
